Tandala'- The mask is a movie about a woman who is given the status of a goddess the moment she is born. Based on a novel by Suresh Dwadashiwar, the story revolves around a character in the novel, 'Sonasala', a woman bound by traditions and values of the society. Being proclaimed as a goddess, she is not supposed to keep company of men. She is made to suppress her womanly wishes and not allowed to have any s e x ual desires. Bound by traditions and the living under the mask of a goddess, 'Tandala' is about a womens struggle.
The movie, directed by Sanjay Surkar was premiered at the recently held Goa Film Festival. It was applauded a lot by critics as well as the audience. There were two attempts to make the novel into a movie. The first one was by director Rajdutta and the second was by Hemant Devkar. But on both the occasions, the attempt just could not materialise. This was when, producer Madhuri Ashirgade of AaiShappat fame took up the project. She has also given the music to the movie. The movie has three songs, the lyrics for which have been written by poet F. M. Shinde. The main attraction of the movie is the return of Asawari Joshi, who plays the main role and Tushar Dalvi who plays a negative role in the movie and to whom Asawari falls in love with. The movie which also stars Upendra Limaye, Anant Jog and Umesh Kamat will be released on December 12 in Pune. So be ready to explore this movie based on a unique subject.
A woman is not born, but she is made a woman... says Simone De Beauvoir. A mask of womanhood is thrust upon her by the society, which is an outcome of conspiracy made by religion, customs and male chauvinism. Tandala... The Mask is a story of such a woman who sis denied of her womanhood by imposing upon her the mask of a deity. Sonsala (Asawari Joshi) is believed to be a goddes right since her childhood. Her parents, teachers, friends and at a later stage even her husband worship her seeking her blessings. But what if this holy status given to her suffocates her basic desires as a woman? Story of Sonsala is the story of her struggle to get herself liberated from all such superstitious customs, beliefs and experience pleasure of her womanhood. Grown-up Sonsala realizes that this is not the kind of life that she wants to lead and one at a time, with unkonwing impulse, she fall in love with E. Venkateshwarrao alias Nawabsaheb (Tushar Dalvi), a local tyrant and a man of few virtues. Does Nawabsaheb respond to her feelings? Sawaishankar (Upyendra Limaye) is a fierce young man who hates his father Diwarkarrao (Anant Jog) for disregarding his mother and maintaning illicit releationship with Laxmi (Surekha Kudchi). He hates all those who enjoy a happy life but without any ethics. Keshav (Umesh Kamat), an adolescent outsider attracted by the divine beauty of Sonsala, tries to solve the mystery of divinity woven around Sonsala and carries the story forward.... Does Sonsala succeed in tearing off the mask of deity forced upon her life by the society or...???
