While this is an ‘Adarsh Gaon’, the moment elections are through, none of the villagers care about what happens to it. Appa tries his best to get the people to contribute towards maintaining the reputation of the village but to no avail. One night, while walking around, he happens to overhear a conversation and an idea strikes him. Soon after, Ankush (Khapre) finds Appa unconscious and takes him to the hospital. At the hospital, Appa briefly regains consciousness and speaks about a woman from the village having an extra-marital affair with someone, but slips back into unconsciousness before telling her name. The quest to know the woman’s name sends the villagers into frenzy. They try their best to find out but constantly fail. Does Appa reveal the name? And does he get the villagers to work? The film is a joy ride primarily because of its actors. It doesn’t have a very engaging story but the situational comedy and punches from the bunch of experienced performers helps it strike a chord with viewers. Prabhavalkar is spot on as the eccentric oldie and the supporting cast, including Bhau Kadam, Sanjay Khapre and Kamlesh Sawant, do their best.Anup Jagdale’s this flim reminds me of those compact Irish comedies like Intermission or Waking Ned Devine (and of course Priyadarshan’s ensemble comedies like Malamaal Weekly; which was directly inspired by Ned Devine), but not in a good way. The films I mentioned are stories of communities, and instead of a single protagonist, they feature intertwining stories of lots of well meaning but crooked people. They arrive at a mutually satisfactory conclusion after a lot of individual complications. These films appear to be simplistic but are of a fairly complex nature and have carefully crafted screenplays, designed to make us sympathetic towards the characters no matter what they do. This film essentially falls in the same category but is unable to deliver either the charm or the entertainment of the genre. The central figure in the film is Appa (Prabhavalkar), an eccentric but well meaning elder in the village Manyachi Wadi. The village takes the award every year as a model community, but in reality is riddled with all sorts of problems from corruption to water shortage and more. Appa has tried his best to reform the community to no result and is about to be thrown out by the villagers who prefer the things the way they are. On the eve of his planned banishing, Appa witnesses something unexpected. But before he could divulge the details of what he saw, he loses consciousness for no apparent reason. The villagers who want to get to the bottom of the secret try to get Appa conscious enough to speak, but to no avail.
