STORY: Raised in a household without the presence of her mother and a father who is away most of the times, Savitri Sardesai learns to be practical in her approach towards life. But equations change when her father remarries and brings home Savi’s stepmom Amala. REVIEW: Relations often tend to have multiple hues. They are never plain black or white. But once in a while there comes a person who you just connect with. For Savitri (Bapat), that person is Amala (Barve). After staying a widower for most of his life, Savi’s father, Sardesai (Karmarkar) suddenly brings home Amala and announces that he has remarried. Even for someone like Savi, who is practical and isn’t really bothered about her father’s decisions, this comes as a shock. Gradually, she accepts the presence of Amala in her life and the two develop a bond of friendship. This is aided by the fact that Amala is not much older than Savitri. However, while the two ladies mingle, Savi’s relation with her father doesn’t really improve. Sardesai fails to understand Savi’s point of view and continues with his practical, no-nonsense method in raising her. But the young girl has had enough and she decides to take control of her life. the story has another angle as well. The story has more to do with Savi’s journey and how she comes to terms with her emotional self, even while Savi’s and Ammi’s friendship is important to the film. The script is well adapted, retaining the high points and character graphs of the original story, and expanding only where the possibility of a logical extension presents itself. This has led to the addition of a character in the film, Savi’s fiancé, Ram (Pradhan). Ram’s character is beneficial to the film because it helps us understand Savi, but it also takes up a lot of screen time. This reduces the opportunity of developing the bond between Ammi and Savi. The parts where the dialogue sounds artificial, and characters talk too much, are flaws in the film. Avoiding repetitive dialogues and voice-overs would have been a better strategy. Though the title puts focus on both the leading ladies, the story is more tilted towards presenting Savi’s journey. That said, Amala is a very important part of this journey because she shapes Savi in a way that her father failed to. Similarly, another person who helps take the story forward is Ram, Savi’s love interest. To put it straight, This film works because of its well-established characters. The film, based on Gauri Deshpande’s story Paus Ala Motha, is not just a story of two women. Pratima Joshi, who makes her directorial debut, succeeds in creating a film that offers a fresh outlook at relations and how they shape a person. It also tells you that someone’s personality shouldn’t be the benchmark for being friends with the person. Priya and Mukta ace their roles. Priya plays the rebellious teenager as well as sorted grown up perfectly and makes it look like a cakewalk, though it’s not! Mukta lends authenticity to Amala with her restrained portrayal and makes you feel for her. Bhushan Pradhan, Kiran Karmarkar and Aarti Wadgabalkar too shine in their roles.
