This film, directed by Dipak Patil, certainly had potential to be a good film. It deals with an idea that can resonate with most of us at a fundamental level, and has something every parent and child should think about. The subject is not entirely new. A child being forced to serve the ambitions of his parents has been handled in films like Mission Champion (where the child was played by Anurag Worlikar, who also plays the protagonist in This film) or more recently, in Siddhant and Saha Goon, but the characters in This film are more relatable. The film looks at the practical side of the problem, where the manipulation by parents is subtly disguised as affection and how children learn to rationalise the process, letting their own interests take a backseat to accommodate the wishes of their parents. The simple message here is that one should listen to the inner voice and do what one feels compelled to do. The protagonist here is Aniruddha Patil (Worlikar). His parents (Nandu Madhav, Pratiksha Lonkar) want him to become a doctor, something Aniruddha has not really thought about, but has accepted automatically. As Aniruddha studies for his final HSC exam, the film needed to build up a tense drama leading to his performance and its outcome, but the plot meanders. You have many unnecessary characters and subplots, high school humour, love story bits, know-it-all sister’s (Sane) track and so on. As we near the intermission, the film picks up no speed, and further confuses us by adding a new setting and characters post intermission. One of the problems here is the title of the film. The title This film points to the crucial 12th standard exam the kids take before they embark on their chosen career path. The title makes the audience think that the film will focus on this important year in the protagonist’s life, which is not the case. The film is not about a particular year or a specific exam, but a career choice the kids need to make. When we get focused on the 12th standard exam, the post intermission portion takes us completely by surprise. A neutral title would have benefitted the film. What I liked here is the film refrains from making villains of parents, otherwise a standard trick for such subjects. They are human and accept the situation and try to work with it. The actors who play these characters are equally responsible for this, but the script supports the portrayals. The length of the film, which runs to two-and-a-half hours, is its biggest weakness. Once we realise where it is heading, it would have been best to reach there quickly. Instead, the film continues on a conventional narrative path. This further upsets the second half, where scenes from college take up too much prominence. These scenes include the usual tropes like ragging, an arrogant teacher track, songs and so on. It’s almost like switching to another film for no reason.
