As the movie ends, a reporter calls these five senior citizens- Rustam, Vikram, Joshi, Sawant and Pradhan (Shivaji Satam, Vikram Gokhale, Satish Alekar, Ashok Saraf and Dilip Prabhavalkar) the ‘real rockstars’, and that’s what these friends are. Their characters are grey, but you still come to empathise with them. The movie opens with these friends catching up in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, post their morning walk. However, Joshi is missing. Concerned with his absence for two days, the friends pay him a visit at home only to find out his granddaughter, a model, has been murdered. And although Balwa, a well known industrialist, is the culprit, he finds his way out through the legal system and this leaves the senior citizens helpless. Watching him slip away makes them realise the failure of the legal system and they decide to take the law in their hands. However, they keep Pradhan, a staunch follower of Gandhian philosophy, out of the loop. What happens next is the central theme of the movie. A crime thriller always has the risk of going overboard with an over play of situations. But here, the director Mahesh Manjrekar has shown that he understands how much is enough. The film has a unique plot with an equally gripping screenplay, making it the biggest plus for the viewer. On the flip side however, the second half seems a little stretched. The lavani number only adds to the woes and could’ve been easily done away with. All the characters in the movie have been very thoughtfully chalked out. And the veterans have left no stone unturned to keep these characters real and relatable. Satish Alekar easily makes the switch between the man on a mission and an old man next door. Performances, incredible story and the powerful screenplay sums up what the movie feels like. Baring the few stretched parts, Me Shivaji Park keeps you engrossed.
